Manufacturer: Simrad
Model Number: R99
Series: Transducer
Listed Item Condition: New other (see details)
Additional Notes: Please read the entire description carefully, as this transducer offers an excellent value but will not work in all applications. This transducer was one of several never-installed transducers we aquired from a captain cleaning out his storage unit. The captain used to do testing with Simrad in the era of the EQ/CA/CX/CE series. This family of units had a sounder built around the Simrad Fisheries Combi series of transducers, which used a 75ohm low impedance 50khz element and a low impedance 75ohm 200 khz element. The combi was a 1kw transducer which – in contrast to Airmar’s B260, which had an impedance of 250 ohms on the low side and 90 ohms on the high side, the low-frequency impedance difference was significant.
Since this transducer was built and tuned to act like the Combi, it features a 75 ohm impedance on both frequencies. A “regular” R99/R199 Airmar transducer has a 100 ohm impedance on both frequencies so while there is still an impedance difference, it is not nearly as significant as the 1kw. Therefore, connecting this dual line transducer to something like a Furuno and running it as if it’s a 100ohm unit will not result in any issues with impedance mismatch or over-driving. If anything, you’ll get a little bit of a bump in the power output of the unit (say 2200w instead of 2000), but it will still be operating well within the confines of its allowable design limits.
These transducers were provided for testing but were never installed, and they never went into full scale production – they are essentially fully functional prototypes complete with all mounting/installation materials. For this reason, they carry no manufacturer’s warranty (we warranty them for 90 days) and there will not be any information available for them online. If you are uncomfortable with this, probably best to buy a new OEM transducer but if you are okay with this and understand the value being offered (a new R109 is $4000), this is a great option. They can be used on a multitude of units as outlined below:
Simrad – Obviously, they can be used on the EQ/CA/CX/CE series units they were originally intended for, the 7-pin plug is present to connect to echo2. For newer evo Simrads, probably the best option is to directly wire to the BSM-2 module and manually set the impedance taps to 100 ohm (we’ve included the instruction page of the manual that outlines this procedure). It will operate at 1kw but with the increased sensitivity of the larger elements. For NSS evo 3/3s, you can wire directly to the 2x Xsonic transducer ports (you will need 2x Xsonic pigtails and will need to splice) and select the “Combi” transducer as your transducer type. They will operate at 1kw.
Furuno – For any dual line (not 10-pin!) sounder or sounder module, such as DFF3, FCV-295, FCV-1150, etc, you can cut the plug off and wire to terminals (or solder to 4-pin plugs) and select the same taps as the R99/R199 on the tap settings chart.
Garmin – Only for Garmin GSD26 (we are unsure of manual configuation on the GSD28) you will cut the plug off and hard wire – you will need to go into the “manual transducer configuration page” for the GSD26, and you will need to manually set each frequency, power output, and impedance – frequencies will be set to 50 and 200, power output will be 2000 for each, impedance will be 75 for each.
Please note: The extra 7-pin cable was in the box, it is probably not needed for ANY application but we are including it in case it is being used with the EQ/CA/CX/CE series and it turns out that it is needed.
As far as we know, there is not an application where this will work on Raymarine, and it will not work on any 10-pin Furuno, 8 pin blue Garmin, 12 pin Garmin, etc. Only on the very specific applications listed above and using the instructions above. Failure to follow those to the “t” or using in any other application will likely not work. If you have a question about your specific application or situation, please feel free to send us a message.
