This is a Furuno Doppler Speed Log DS80 that we acquired from a vessel that was undergoing a refit.

The DS80 is an SDME (Speed and Distance Measuring Equipment) utilizing the Doppler Effect principle. It complies with the latest IMO, IEC, and ISO standards as well as the rules of the classification societies.
Unlike an electromagnetic speed log or other types, this equipment does not require a sensor protruding through the ship hull; this greatly reduces routine maintenance. Another special feature is the capability to measure own ship speeds at dead slow movement with high accuracy. The pair-beams at 1 MHz sonic frequency ensure accuracy in rough water.
The primary functions of the DS80 operate without any interaction. Simply keep the power switch on. The user-friendly menu ensures easy adjustment of all functions. Auxiliary functions such as resetting the Distance Run and speed offset are easy using the menu.
We are unable to test the transducer function because we do not have the proper transducer(s) to do so. But when we connected everything the DS-810 transceiver was pinging.
The data that you see on the screen was from a GP-320B that was connected to a VX2, that we sent via NMEA0183 into the DS-80
This includes:
- DS-800 – Good condition, minor scratches on the plastic lens.
- DS-801 – Distribution box that is set to be used on 110 VAC. Can be used on 230 VAC, please refer to the manual for jumper configuration.
- DS-802 – Terminal box with 7-pin Power/NMEA cable and 6-pin NMEA0183 cable
- DS-810 – Transceiver unit
***By no means is this system complete, user-supplied wires needed to be run, transducers need to connect, and maybe a few other items to complete this DS-80.***
This would make for a great replacement for someone who has the same system that has experienced a failure or for someone looking for spare parts.
