PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION FULLY BEFORE PURCHASING
This Garmin GPSmap 8215 is working but with two issues which we will describe below:
  1. The NMEA2000 port has been moved to the “House Port.” This was done to correct an issue where the unit’s NMEA2000 port was not functioning properly. When a NMEA2000 drop cable is plugged into the house port, it will be functionally identical to the original NMEA2000 port.
  2. This unit will not read network devices unless it is plugged into another 8200 series OR  a GRID remote. When another 8200 series display or a GRID remote are present on the network, this will communicate flawlessly with sounder modules, radars, remote card reader, etc. We have no idea why this issue is present, but it has been verified, re-verified, and re-re-verified. We are including a complete GRID Remote add-on which can be mounted on your dash and actually makes the unit easier to use, especially in rough seas.
Cosmetically, the unit does have a bit of backlight “bleed” on the outer edge (roughly 1/4″ around the perimeter of the unit). This is NOT the same as LCD screen degradation and is only visible on black backgrounds when the backlight is at full brightness. This has no effect on functionality or longevity of the unit. Also, the rubberized coating on the GRID remote roto-dial has been removed as it began degrading. We find that once it starts to degrade and chip off, it is best to scrape the remaining coating off so that you don’t get it on your fingers when using the remote.
In an ideal world, one would find an 8215 that doesn’t have these two “special” peculiarities, but we have this unit priced $1000 under what it would normally be priced for. It still carries Max Marine Electronics’ 90 day warranty, and all other functions have been tested and found to be operational. The unit has been updated to the latest software. We did not have a suncover to include with this unit, it is sold as a “core only” – you will reuse your cables, bezel, and suncover. Touch screen, LCD, and all other functions are working.
